UK drops visitor visa requirement for Colombia, Peru and Guyana

The UK has announced that nationals of Colombia, Peru and Guyana will no longer need a visa to travel to the UK for up to six months, a move that will benefit short-term students from those countries and has been welcomed by industry stakeholders.

The new rules for Colombia, Peru and Guyana will come into force from November 9th, according to a statement issued by the British Embassy in Colombia.

The Embassy said that the decision had been approved after “an extensive and rigorous process of evaluation” by different government departments.

George Hodgson, British Ambassador to Colombia said, “We are happy to be able to share the UK with even more Colombians. Clearly, the removal of visitor visas – a process we have been working on for a long time – marks a big step in our UKCOL [UK-Colombia] relationship. We hope to see an increase in the number of Colombian visitors to the UK very soon.”
Under current UK rules, visitors to the UK can study for up to six months as long as study is at an accredited institution. As reported by StudyTravel Magazine last year, this also applies to study at independent boarding schools.

Felipe Garces , General Manager of Colombian agency Extudia and President of Colombian agency association ANEX Colombia , told StudyTravel Magazine, that he welcomed the move.

“It is great for the perception of the UK in Colombia. It will increase the interest in this iconic and great destination. More people will certainly travel.”

He added, “This will indeed help agencies to promote the UK, and we expect a growth in the number of students travelling to the UK in 2023.”

English UK , the association representing more than 340 ELT providers, tweeted, “Very welcome news that students from Colombia, as well as Peru and Guyana, will be able to study English in the UK more easily.”

Nationals of Colombia, Peru and Guyana who have applied for a visitor visa to the UK and have not yet provided biometric data can withdraw their application and apply for a visa fee refund here, the Embassy of Colombia said.
